The First Grade Helpful Hedgehogs spent the week before break celebrating fall and Thanksgiving with Animal Print Day, Comfy Day, Class Shirt Day, Superhero Day, and Fall Fun Day.
Students have read books about the fall, created illustrations, discussed Thanksgiving traditions, and written thank you letters to special family members. Thank you to Auggie’s mom, Rebecca Gabriel, for making aprons and turkey shirts!
Happy late Thanksgiving from First Grade!

Balanced and Unbalanced Forces: To conclude our study of balanced and unbalanced forces, third grade headed to the event center and participated in an old-fashioned tug of war! This activity allowed students to experience the concepts they had learned in a fun and dynamic way!

Do we know the difference between fiction and nonfiction...I think we do! Students had fun doing a hands-on activity to practice identifying fiction from nonfiction in library.

Studying the Dewey Decimal System is way more fun when you play bingo with Skittles and M&M's!

4th and 5th graders had a blast with the new Breakout Edu Boxes (thank you, GPA!) They escaped from Mr. Lemoncello's library by solving clues allowing them open locks to "break out." Teamwork, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Nathan Wu achieved 2nd places for both 200IM and 100Breast on the MSHSAA Boys State Championships November 15-16, with new personal best and new school records. Proud of our Bluejay!

On November 19th, 31 ELE 410 students had the opportunity to teach eight groups of first and third graders in Dr. Hammerschmidt’s and Mrs. Gray’s classrooms at Greenwood.
Early in the semester, during Week 3, the ELE 410 students met their Greenwood students and gathered valuable information to help them design a 5E lesson. These lessons targeted Missouri Learning Standards: first graders explored the contributions of individuals typically studied in K-5 programs associated with national holidays, while third graders examined the historical significance of notable Missourians who have shaped our state and nation.
Throughout the semester, ELE 410 students deepened their understanding of the 5E instructional model by participating in hands-on 5E lessons. Working collaboratively, they established group norms, developed their own 5E lessons, and rehearsed by teaching the lessons to their peers. The process included video-recording these rehearsals, receiving constructive peer feedback, and revising their lessons for Greenwood.
The culminating teaching experience at Greenwood allowed ELE 410 students to apply their learning in a meaningful and authentic setting. Many reflected on how this experience significantly boosted their teaching confidence.

Rachel and Jordan Heinz vested the first-grade classroom to celebrate Hadley being the student of the week November 18-22, 2024. Hadley enjoys gymnastics, reading, tacos, swimming, and plays the piano. She loves ice cream with sprinkles! Hadley recently celebrated her birthday on November 8th and wanted to treat her classmates to an Andy’s ice cream party with lots of sprinkles during her celebration.

Congratulations to Vihaan and Vivaan Bandaru for their impressive achievements in the Math League competition! Qualifying for the district level is a significant milestone, and earning silver medals in the first round speaks to their hard work and talent in mathematics. Best of luck to both as they prepare for the district competition in April! We are Greenwood proud!

Our Middle School Scholar Bowl team defeated Billings in the year's first match. Go Bluejays!

4th graders used lemons as batteries to create circuits and learn about electricity!

Pick of the Pies!
The third graders enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving pie tasting where they sampled four different kinds of pies-apple, cherry, chocolate, and pumpkin. All the pies were generously donated by parents. After tasting each one, the students picked their favorite and wrote an opinion paragraph about it, sharing their thoughts on what made that pie special.

Congratulations to our very own Maren Altrup! Maren is a fifth grader in Mrs. Martin’s class who was honored by getting her opinion about AI published in the Time For Kids magazine. That magazine is shared around the United States and other countries as well. Great job Maren! We are very proud of you!

First Grade Helpful Hedgehog Student of the Week for November 11-15, 2024, is George Musgrave! George invited his dad, Mr. Brian Musgrave, to speak to the class. Students were read one of George’s favorite books, The Raft by Jim LaMarche. The story encourages the reader to enjoy summer vacation, celebrate adventures, use your imaginations and explore the world around us. George’s dad shared that George was named after the Founding Fathers, George Washington and Alexander Hamilton. George likes to travel with his family and has taken up a new hobby, Motocross. Students watched a video of George dancing, traveling, and riding his Motocross Bike. Students enjoyed a cupcake to celebrate George being the student of the week and his BIRTHDAY!

Reading can take you places! This is Charlie in 4th grade eating ice cream at Braum’s. He earned a coupon by reading!

Isaiah Remulla was a guest at the Downtown Rotary Club and was recognized as an exemplary student. Congratulations, Isaiah!

National STEM Day is all about celebrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math—the essential skills that shape how we understand and interact with the world. 2nd graders were challenged with making the longest chain using one piece of paper. The winning team of Harper & Pierce made a chain that was 167 inches long.
