After reading "The Disappearing Snowman", first grade students conducted an experiment to learn about solids, liquids, gases, and evaporation. The objective was to observe that gas is a matter that can fill a balloon. Bubbles formed in the bottle from the mixture of warm water, sugar, and yeast, causing the balloon to inflate. Awesome job scientists!

New Year, New Greenwood Debate Success! Some very dedicated Greenwood Debaters spent part of the semester break competing at the first tournament of 2023 hosted by Lebanon High School. Huge congratulations to each student who completed the competition – because all of those students came home from Lebanon with at least one trophy and two of those students earned tournament championships! Jamie Alford was the tournament champion in International Extemp and a semi-finalist in Informative Speaking. Jamie also paired with Fatima Aslam and defeated teams from Springfield Catholic, Bolivar, and Glendale on their way to third place in Varsity Policy Debate. Fatima was also sixth in International Extemp and a semi-finalist in Original Oratory. Also, Romi Kim placed 5th in United States Extemp. Our first year (novice) competitors also excelled against quality competition. Ethan Duff and Marcus Ryan finished 3rd in Novice Policy Debate. Ethan was also the tournament champion in United States Extemp! Tristan Khoshyomn just missed another championship with the 2nd place award in International Extemp. Gyan Grewal finished 5th in Informative Speaking. During the spring semester the Blue Jay debaters will be working toward a strong finish to the invitational season and hope for several national qualifiers this year! Go Jays!

Here are some photos of the gift drop off from the Greene Valley State School holiday service project with Dr. Hammerschmidt’s first grade & the sophomore class. Thanks to the Clark family, Collin (10th grade), Cooper (Greenwood grad), and parents Bill and Natalie for organizing this donation drive, wrapping and delivering Christmas gifts for 10 years now. We were also able to provide breakfast for all the teachers/staff again as well! This school is located on Pythian Street behind Evangel College and has approximately 60+ children who all have significant disabilities and special needs. The children range in ages from 5 to 21 years old. All are referred from public schools in Springfield and the surrounding areas and are funded by State Board of Education. They have a PE coach and a speech teacher and have contract therapies for PT and OT. Greene Valley is so very grateful every year we are able to do this, and they look forward to it!! They love these kids so much and for them to witness a bit of joy in the kids they effortless care for, is ALWAYS a gift to them. Thanks to everyone who donated gifts and for the breakfast!

The Greenwood Debate Team has had an excellent December of competition, participating in tournaments at both Springfield Catholic and Bolivar High School. The results are as follows: 14 Greenwood debaters competed at the tournament hosted by Springfield Catholic on December 2nd and 3rd. Jamie Alford was tournament champion in International Extemporaneous Speaking and 3rd place in Informative Speaking! The varsity policy team of Jamie Alford and Eleanor Hilotin ended their undefeated run in the semi-finals of policy debate, securing 3rd place. Eleanor Hilotin was also in the semi-finals of Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking. The team of Mary Gabriel and Romi Kim made it to the quarter finals in Policy Debate, securing 4th place. Mary Gabriel also received 6th place in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking. Minal Khan also represented the varsity squad. Despite the tournament not having a novice division (meaning our first-year students were competing against fourth year seniors), our novice squad competed hard, won some debates, and learned a lot! Greenwood novice was represented by Gabriel Parada, Eli Wilson, Marcus Ryan, Anna Le, Amore, Carys Clore, Ethan Duff, Tristan Khoshyomn, and Gyan Grewal. Tristan and Gyan were ranked in the top ten in Policy Debate! A small but mighty contingent of the Greenwood team traveled to Bolivar High School on December 9th and 10th. The team of Tristan Khoshyomn and Fatima Aslam were tournament champions in Varsity Policy Debate, beating multiple teams from Glendale and Kickapoo on their way to victory! Not to be done with only one tournament championship, Tristan was also tournament champion in Novice Extemporaneous Speaking! Fatima Aslam made the semi-finals round of Original Oratory. The varsity squad was also represented by Romi Kim and Mary Gabriel, who were one rank away from clearing in EACH of their 3 events. In addition to the efforts of Tristan in novice individual events, the novice squad was represented by Marcus Ryan and Ethan Duff. The pair were tournament champions in Novice Policy Debate, beating 5 schools on their way to their first-place finish! In addition, Ethan Duff qualified for the semi-final round of novice Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking. The team will now take a well-deserved break and jump back into action in January at the Lebanon Tournament.
