Reading Buddies from Mrs. Flander’s 2nd grade and Mrs. Martin’s 5th grade had some special visitors today. Mrs. Suzanna Lynne is an author who brought her “Stars” of the show to our school, Buddy and Winnie. Mrs. Lynne writes and illustrates her own books. She read one of her own books to us, spoke about bullying, and shared some tricks. This visit made our day “paw-some.”

Mr. Madsen's high school physics students have spent the past few weeks creating a Rube Goldberg Machine to demonstrate energy transfer, simple machines, and conservation of energy. Students had certain design requirements that they had to adhere to such as a run time greater than 10 seconds, completing a final task, a certain number of steps in a limited amount of space, and a creative theme. First Grade Students were invited to watch the Rube Goldberg Machines in action. Physics students shared how the machines were designed, how they worked, demonstrated the process, and answered questions. First Grade students had a "ball" watching the machines and visiting the physics classroom. Thank you, Mr. Madsen and Physics Students, first graders were talking about how fun it would be to build their own Rube Goldberg Machines!!

Biyanka Pokhrel is the First Grade Helpful Hedgehog for March 31-April 4. Biyanka’s mom Dr. Bismita Pokhrel is a Clinical Pharmacist (Pharm.D, CHC) and works at Mercy Hospital helping people stay healthy and safe with the right medicines! Students learned about how to become a pharmacist and the courses you need to take in college and graduate school. Dr. Pokhrel shared a PowerPoint presentation over medicine safety, what medicine is, when you might need medicine, and medicine usage. Students asked terrific questions and learned a lot about this career. Medicine helps our bodies feel better when we’re sick or keeps us from getting sick. It’s like a helper for your body! If you have a fever, cough, or tummy ache, medicine can help fix it or make it hurt less. Adults should always give the medicine to you for safety reasons. Students were given a treat bag and pens shaped like medicine bottles. Thank you, Biyanka and Dr. Pokhrel!

Jason Kamel was the student of the week March 24-28. Jason invited his parents Dr. Nabil Kamel and Nourham Bechay to visit with the class about Egypt. Students learned that Egypt officially the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a country that spans the northeast corner of Africa and southwest corner of Asia via the Sinai Peninsula. Jason’s mom, Nourham, shared about Mummies and Pharaohs, who were believed to be powerful gods who reigned over Egypt. The Pyramids are large tombs that were built for the Pharaohs. Egypt is a modern country whose capital city is Cairo. The official language of Egypt is Arabic. The national dish is called Koshar, ful, falafel, and feteer. Students also learned about some of the most influential Egyptians, including Mohamed Salah, a professional footballer who plays for Liverpool and captains the Egyptian National Team. We also learned about Omar Sharif a famous actor and Dr. Magdi Yacoub who invented the heart transplant procedure. Egypt has many beautiful beaches and the Red Sea. The Ras Muhammad National Park is a major diving destination for tourist from all over the world who come to see marine life around the Shark and Yolanda reefs and the Thistlegorm wreck. The First Grade Helpful Hedgehogs read How to Catch a Leprechaun written by Adam Wallace. After reading the book students extended the reading by writing and illustrating how they would catch a Leprechaun. Then students created their own Leprechaun Traps. The traps caught an E.L. Fudge cookie and gold coins! The sneaky Leprechaun did make a mess with green glitter, shamrock and gold coins in our classroom!
