The First Grade Helpful Hedgehogs have had Zoo in The Room (Thank You GPA) and learned about various animals. We have learned that Hedgehogs… are social mammals, they are diverse-17 species, are speedy, they are night owls, they do not like the heat, they are carnivores, and they are lactose intolerant. Fun facts many student did not knowJ Students created Hedgehogs to culminate our animal units of study in first grade.

We are going to miss our very talented and brilliant librarian Ms. Borneman! Dea Borneman will be retiring towards the end of summer. She has worked full-time at Missouri State University for over 38 years, but her personal experience with Greenwood began in 1982 when she did her student teaching in the Social Studies department. She quickly realized Greenwood was an exceptional school! Ms. Borneman returned in the early 1990’s to complete a practicum for certification as a school library media specialist. Since 2000, she has served as the head of Haseltine Library, and she is also a professor in the MSU Library Science Department. She has worked closely with fellow Greenwood teachers on national presentations, journal articles, and a book chapter, all of which highlighted some of the incredible collaborative projects created by our faculty and students. After 42 years, Greenwood feels like home. Ms. Borneman thanks the entire Greenwood community for their support and considers herself blessed to have been part of such an amazing place.

First Grade Helpful Hedgehog Clara Phillip’s grandparents, David and Julie Peck, presented about a recent trip to celebrate Clara being student of the week. The Peck’s, known as Baba and Dawdy to Clara, started in Amsterdam and ended the river cruise in Switzerland. Students sampled cheese from a dairy farm in Switzerland. Clara walked around and shared a large cowbell with students and presented each classmate with a ‘cow” themed pencil. After viewing the presentation students asked terrific questions. Thank you for sharing about such a wonderful adventure with our class and celebrating Clara.

Greenwood Girls on the Run raised $328.60 at their Lemonade/Iced Tea Stand today for their Community Impact Project! The girls brainstormed, compromised, and agreed that they wanted to help animals and chose to donate the proceeds to the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri. We’re so proud of these young ladies and a big thank you to everyone who supported the girls efforts today.

The First Grade Helpful Hedgehogs created magical crystal hedgehogs. The formation of the crystal spines takes 3-4 days. The hedgehogs glow in the dark after exposure to the sunlight or a flashlight. Students selected their color of hedgehog based upon their own hypothesis of which hedgehog would grow more crystals. We were surprised to see that some of the hedgehogs did not form the crystals, while others did. Students decided after observation that the red hedgehogs grew more crystals than the other two colors, green and blue.
