First grade students used Skittles to make a Skittles rainbow science experiment to learn about dissolving, absorption, and how colors mix! Skittles contain dye and the combination of dye and sugar dissolves quickly in warm water. Skittles were good for this experiment because they are colorful and are fast dissolvers. When placed around the edge of the plate and warm is water added, the dye quickly dissolves and begins to absorb into the water, making a colorful rainbow. Students explored and discussed why the colors separated. How "sweet" is science??
