Holocaust survivor, Erika Schwartz, visited Greenwood's Holocaust class on November 29. This is the second year she has visited Greenwood to talk about her experiences and take questions from our students. Thanks to Mr. Tate for arranging this visit!
The 4th grade art class created 3-D paper snowflakes to decorate the elementary wing with for winter! Let it snow!
Peer to Peer met for their Nov/Dec meeting on Monday. During this meeting they made fleece blankets to give to Gathering Friends and then made Gingerbread houses to decorate the school with!
The Greenwood Girls Swim Team finished 4th out of 7 teams! Reese Moore won both her events, finishing 1st in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, hitting state consideration times in both. Katelyn Schaller was 2nd in the 100 backstroke and 6th in the 100 freestyle. Lilly Larrieu scored in the 200 free. Quano Alaimo scored in the 500 free relay. The girls next meet is the All-Relays tomorrow night. Great job Lady Jays!
Mike Blake, AKA Santa, and his elves Debbie Casada, Brooke, Parker, and Wylie Evans, and Amanda, Jack, and Katie Lindsey, did an amazing job decorating the halls of Greenwood just in time to get us all in the Christmas spirit! Thank you for all of your hard work and making Greenwood a great place to learn.

Scholar Bowl competed in Fair Grove and despite losing team members to Thanksgiving vacation and sickness we were able to play with 2 teams. Keerti, Mary, Minal, Tristan, Kelby and Ethan were our teams this week. Even though we didn't place in the top 4 everyone answered at least one question and Minal got her first "power" answer. Mary placed 18th overall and fun was had by all.
The elementary classes learned what it means to be thankful today by celebrating with different Thanksgiving Feasts! Pictured are Mrs. Lowe's Kindergarten class and Dr. Hammerschmidt's 1st grade.
The traditional Thanksgiving Assembly was held today at Greenwood! Dr. Sheri Slater led the Concert Band in two lovely performances, followed by a piano solo by Madhav Nair and a singing of "What a Wonderful World" by Mary Gabriel. Student Body President Griffin Litherland and Senior Class President Nick Burri then gave individual addresses on gratefulness and the many things in life we have to be thankful for. Dr. Toby Dogwiler, father of Nyah Dogwiler, was the presenter this year, giving a fantastic speech on the Pilgrims journey to the new world, and the many journeys the upcoming generations will face. We appreciate him taking the time to talk to our Greenwood students! The assembly wrapped up with a collective singing of the Greenwood Alma Mater. We are so thankful for our Greenwood Family and wish everyone and their families a happy holiday!
On Tuesday, third grade kicked off their opinion writing unit by sampling delicious pies! Students got to taste four types of pies and formed an opinion as to which pie they felt was the best. They used adjectives and descriptive words in their five-paragraph paper. A special shout-out to the parents for donating the pies and volunteering to help serve!
As part of Veteran's Day observances, Ms. Nottingham's 6th grade students wrote letters of appreciation to service members, veterans, and first responders! These letters were sent on to Operation Gratitude, a non-profit that sends care packages to the three groups mentioned. According to Operation Gratitude, letters are always the most appreciated part of the packages. 6th grade students care!
Dr. William Meadows, from the Sociology-Anthropology/Native American Studies department on campus, shared with first grade students about the Native Peoples of Missouri! Students learned about traditions that had been passed down for many generations, the Code Talkers, traditional clothing, and foods. Keito Meadows, a former first grade student, assisted her father in the presentation. Thank you to the Meadows family for sharing!
Paden Amoaful-Essel was Student of the Week in 1st grade! To celebrate, Paden's parents, Paul and Pearl, came to class to teach the students about Ghanaian culture. Paul shared how Ghanaians assign or give native names to their children. The name depends upon which day of the week you are born. Pearl read a story to the class, where students learned that when stories are told by the campfire and begin with “once upon a time”, the listeners respond with “time, time”. Thank you to Paden's family for sharing Ghanaian culture with 1st grade!

Scholar Bowl competed in the Clever Tournament on Saturday! 42 teams from all over Missouri played eleven rounds, with Greenwood A placing 15th and Greenwood B placing 25th.

We had 5 Greenwood students place in the top 55 out of 190! Mary placed 21st, followed by Jamie, Keerti, Nathan and Eleanor.

Greenwood held a Veteran's Day Assembly today to honor all of the men and women who have bravely served our country! The assembly began with a performance from the Greenwood Concert Band, led by Dr. Sheri Slater. This was followed by the Ozarks Mountain Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution presenting the colors, a singing of the National Anthem performed by William Chenevert, the Pledge of Allegiance led by Mary Nottingham, and the song "American Heart" performed by Mollie Scher. Our guest speaker was Tim Garrison, a Lieutenant Colonel for the United States Marine Corps Reserve, who told the noble story of Kyle Carpenter, a Marine who put his life on the line and was awarded the Medal of Honor. Finally, we recognized all of the Veterans that are a part of our Greenwood Family with a drum performance by Matthew Newberry and a sing-along of "America the Beautiful", led by Tim Garrison and Mark Lawley. We are so grateful for all of our Veterans, and thank each and every one of them for their service to America. Happy Veteran's Day!
In honor of Election Day on Tuesday, Kindergarten students learned that citizens vote in a democracy, and were able to experience voting in a class “election"!
MSU hosted a Día de los Muertos competition last week and many Greenwood students competed in the three categories! It was an awesome event hosted by the MCL department along with other colleges. Students were able to walk around to different presentations and gain information about how the loved ones who have passed on from this world are celebrated in different cultures. They took part in creating flowers, taste testing pan de muertos, and enjoying performances by authentic dancers and musicians. It was a blast! Many students from GLS won awards:
