Student of the week Harper Popek’s mom, Amber, and her dad, Dr. Jeremy, presented interesting information to the first grade class. Student’s learned about Harper’s family and her pet Chihuahua, Mya. Harper’s mom is a Certified Public Account at Forvis, where she is employed and also a part owner. After sharing what an accountant does each day and answering questions, the students were each given a Forvis journal for “calculating fun math problems” and then got to try using antique adding machines and calculators. Harpers dad is a Pharmacist with Evans Drug Health Mart Pharmacy and travels to several locations around Missouri. Dr. Popek shared what a pharmacist does each day then talked about what students should do if they find a pill bottle or medications. Students also learned that a pharmacist is an “educator” who talks to patients about how to take medications, administers injections, and shares wellness tips. Harper provided a tasty treat, a super-sized doughnut from Gold-N-Glaze doughnuts!

The First-Grade Helpful Hedgehogs learned about different types of rocks, read about rocks and mindnesz with Ms. Borneman in the library and painted rocks in art with Ms. Grace. Students wrote kind messages on the rocks. Mrs. Gray's Third Grade class, first grades reading buddies, helped hide the rocks on the playground. If you find a special tock you nay keep it, take it home and create another rock to bring back to school. Kindness Rocks💙

Hooray for the 100th day! Kindergarten celebrated 100 days of learning and growing together by creating shirts with 100 objects on them. They also wrote about what life will be like when they are 100 years old, jumped for 100 seconds, counted to 100 in a variety of ways, and had a special snack.

First Grade Candy Heart Science and STEM Exploration First Graders discovered that the candy hearts would not dissolve in the liquids that they tried. Students used clear carbonated drinks, lemon juice, vinegar, sugar water and cooking oil. The lemon juice removed the message off of the candy hearts. The candy hearts that were in the vinegar did not dissolve but they appeared to increase in size and their appearance changed. Students also measured classroom items and stacked candy hearts.

February has been a successful month for Greenwood Debate! The students competed at their last two ‘regular’ season competitions of the year at Rockbridge High School in Columbia, MO and at Springfield Catholic. Tristan Khoshyomn was the tournament champion in Original Oratory at the Columbia Classic! He was also a semi-finalist in International Extemp. Gyan Grewal earned two significant trophies, as 5th place overall in International Extemp and 6th in Informative Speaking. Tristan and Mary Gabriel were the 5th place Champ Policy debate team. Gyan and Ethan Duff placed 6th in Champ Policy debate. The Springfield-Catholic tournament was definitely a great way to end regular invitational season competition for the Bluejays. Tristan was the tournament champion in Original Oratory for the second competition in a row and he also placed 4th in International Extemp. Tristan and Mary Gabriel finished the Policy Debate competition as the 2nd place overall team. Mary also placed 2nd in Informative Speaking. In fact, Greenwood had 3 of the top 6 Informative Speaking entries in the tournament. In addition to Mary, Laila Ozturk finished 4th and Gyan Grewal was 5th in Informative. Amore Pennella was also a semi-finalist in Informative. Minal Khan earned 6th place in Original Oratory and also finished 4th in Policy Debate, with Laila. Ethan Duff also had his best performance of the year, so far, in US Extemp – finishing in 4th place overall and also as a semi-finalist in Original Oratory. Gyan and Laila were also semi-finalists in International Extemp. The team will compete in MSHSAA and NSDA District competitions in March. Good Luck Jays!
