Jay-Pic of the Week!
Annabelle’s mom and dad, Chris and Jen Wilson, celebrated her being student of the week in first grade by sharing about a family passion they have for horses. Hagale Family Arabians and Crishan Park is where it all began. Students learned about the chores that have to be done to take care of the horses, practicing, competing and their winning family experiences. Family is what it is all about! Mary Owen, Philip’s mom, is a Genetic Counselor at Cox. Today we learned many fun facts about Philip. He has ridden a mountain bike without training wheels since he was three years old, he loves sports and plays on two basketball teams and he has completed all the Cub Scout Badges. Mary talked to the students about things that we have in in common and how our DNA Code provides instructions to our bodies. Students learned that we each have 46 Chromosomes that represent our DNA.
Student created an edible DNA model using Twizzlers, Gummy Bears and Toothpicks. Thank you to Philip and his mom for providing a fun science lesson for his student of the week presentation.

Celebrating Greenwood Debate’s January 2024 Success!!
Greenwood Debate participated in one of the largest invitational tournaments of the year hosted by Springfield Central this past weekend. Over 33 schools from across Missouri – including several large schools from the Kansas City and St. Louis area – participated in the Springfield Winter Classic.
Congratulations to Minal Khan and Marcus Ryan - they were the TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS in Varsity Policy Debate! Laila Ozturk continued to show that she is one of the state’s best new freshmen – earning 7th place in the Varsity division of International Extemporaneous Speaking and advancing to the semi-final (top 12) round of Varsity Informative Speaking. Mary Gabriel also advanced to the semi-final round of Informative Speaking. Over 70 students participated in Varsity Informative Speaking, so advancing to the top 12 is certainly impressive. Mary and Tristan Khoshyomn also placed 4th in Champ CX.
The debaters also participated in the Marshfield Invitational earlier this month. Tristan Khoshyomn was the tournament champion in Original Oratory!! Tristan also placed 4th in International Extemporaneous Speaking and along with Mary Gabriel earned 4th place in Policy Debate. Laila Ozturk and Mohan Grewal were quarterfinalists in Novice Policy Debate and Laila was 6th in Varsity Informative Speaking. Other highlights from the tournament included Amore Penella advancing to the semi-final round of Informative Speaking and Abby Ryan advancing to the semi-final round of United States Extemp.
Next up – several varsity students will compete at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, MO this weekend in preparation for district competition.

Student of the Week is Eli Odem. His mom, Dr. Jamie Odem, visited first grade today to share about her job as Pathologist.
Students were shown the different parts of the microscopes.
Students also were able to view slides to look at cell structures.
A favorite slide was of a Bee’s hind leg. Eli treated everyone to Oreo’s after the presentation.
We have some great help in the office!

Over 20 middle school students attended the first Middle School Debate practice after school on January 23! We had vibrant discussions over key topics like "Is chicken pot pie a soup, salad, or sandwich?" AND we began the process of analyzing fiscal policy related to economic inequality, in addition to discussing other current events. Any student in grades 6-8 are welcome to join future practices. Our next meeting is Tuesday, February 6th.
Due to inclement weather Greenwood will be closed on Monday, January 22, 2024. Office's will be closed.
